Very handily situated for the train station, YHA Cambridge is a great hostel, and has been made even nicer recently with a major refurbishment. It has 122 beds in all, in 32 rooms, and there's a wide choice of accommodation ranging from single-sex dormitories to 6 private double rooms and 4 multi-bedded family rooms. Many of the rooms have en-suite facilities, there is a lounge and TV room, a café and bar (serving a full menu all day) and a well-equipped kitchen for self-caterers. There's also free wif-fi and a 24-hour reception. You're also only ten minutes' walk from the city centre, making it an excellent budget option in a city not overflowing with such alternatives. That pretty much puts it first on the list for cheap city breaks in one of England's most beautiful places.

The hostel is very easy to reach if you're arriving by train: just come straight out of the station and walk down Station Rd and make a right onto Tenison Rd; the hostel is a little way down on the right, on the corner of Devonshire Rd. By car, exit the M11 at junction 11 and turn into Trumpington St (A1134). At the fourth set of traffic lights, turn right into Brookland Ave and at the end turn left into Hills Rd. At the next set of traffic lights turn sharp right into Station Rd and then left onto Tenison Rd. The hostel is on the corner of Tenison and Devonshire Rd.
