Punting

Mill Lane Cambridge 01223 359 750

We say

Deliciously lazy sightseeing and an activity rolled into one, the must-do of any Cambridge trip is to punt on the Cam. Used for pleasure trips since Edwardian days, the traditional Fenland craft permit a superb view of the most historic colleges from Silver Street to Magdalene Bridge. The Backs, the historic area through the university buildings, can become rather crowded with punts in the summer and, while chauffeured sightseeing tours are available, it’s more fun to push your own pole. Since almost everyone is a beginner, the odd bumper-car-boat bothers nobody and the atmosphere is always fun and relaxed. For adventure you can punt upriver to Grantchester – even stay overnight – by starting from Silver Street. Punts come for up to six or 12 people, usually with a minimum charge and a credit card deposit. The timescale allowed for boat rental is fairly generous, so on a nice day its well worth grabbing a little picnic beforehand and picnicking on the water as you go!

If it's a nice day there is no better way of enjoying Cambridge then getting a punt. I agree with the other review, its better getting one yourself then hiring one with a guide.Half the fun is in trying to learn how to punt and everyone else on the water is the same so its not a problem if your bad or bumping into people. Buy a little picnic food and head along the water in the sun. Nothing beats it.

Go it on your own ★★★★★

A beautiful way to see the city. Hiring your own boat is so much cheaper than paying for a guided tour. Plus you don't end up sharing with other tourists. We found that you generally overheard plenty of history as you sailed along, and there is plenty to be said about how 'true' the stories the processional punters tell anyway. Beware of bridges, other tourists that appear to be showing off and that pesky willow tree whose branches overhang into the Cams. All may course a tumble into the shallow water. Excellent for views and perfect for picnicking on!
