Fort St George

Midsummer Common Cambridge CB4 1HA

Locals moan that its shabby character was scrubbed away in a refurb. Ignore them. The historic Fort remains glorious in summer – a slice of countryside in the city with river and meadow views from an expansive terrace. The food is passable but the real treat is the great draught beers. Since its one of few places downstream from Jesus Lock, the river is not crowded with punts but instead becomes the training ground for the university's rowing team. Thudding past on the cam just beyond the terrace, you can enjoy the scenes from this old cambridge bolt hole.
