Whitstable Holidays – Accommodation and Places to Stay in Whitstable I Cool Places

Whitstable

A characterful small town just an hour or so from London on the north Kent coast, Whitstable looks out towards Essex across the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Sheppey across The Swale. The big attraction is the unspoilt nature of the place – a traditional seaside resort with long pebble beaches and a working harbour that supports a lively fish market. But it’s also a town that's been 'discovered', and is now known for its good quality, occasionally even sophisticated restaurants, excellent pubs – including a legendary one right on Whitstable's pebbly beach – and a thriving artistic community, whose recent gentrification has led to it being dubbed ‘Islington-on-Sea’. Unsurprisingly, it's a terrific place for a weekend break, and although Whitstable doesn't have a whole load of accommodation to choose from, it hosts a number of offbeat and interesting places to stay, from quirky B&Bs and coastal apartments to offbeat self-catering options and the odd boutique hotel.

Eat and Drink

There are a lot of good places to eat in Whitstable, whether you want to pick at fish and chips on the beach or splurge on a fancy (but not too fancy – this is laid-back Whitstable, after all) seafood feast. The best places use local, seasonal ingredients – not only fish and seafood, but also the wonderful veg and soft fruit that Kent is famous for – and as competition is fierce, standards are consistently high. It's a foodie's dream.

Things to Do

Most people spend their time on the beaches, of course, but Whitstable also has a buzzy little harbour and a number of low-key attractions that make strolling around the town a perfectly pleasant prospect on rainy days.

Shop

Whitstable is a great place for shopping, as the DFLs (Down from Londoners) are fully aware. Vintage clothes and homeware, arts and crafts, books and seaside fripperies are all in abundance – head first for trendy Harbour Street and the High Street.
