As the weather improves and summer seems to be upon us, we round up a selection of hotels that we think enjoy some of the best seaside locations in the UK.

Bedruthan Hotel & Spa

This is perhaps the family hotel that hard-pressed parents have dreamed of, with soft play, free childcare, adventure playground and everything you could need for the kids, and grown-up dining for grown-ups at the Porthminster Cafe and Herring restaurants, and there's the sea of course, right there and a cofuc for all generations. Justifiably Cornwall's hotel of the year last year.

Druidstone Hotel

We write about this place a lot, because it really is one of our favourites, and that's mainly because it has everything you could wish for in a hotel – great food, wonderful breakfasts, a late bar, stuff for kids, and, best of all, a clifftop location to die for, overlooking a fabulous Welsh beach. Book well in advance – it's rightly popular.

Gyllyngvase House Hotel

We love this Falmouth guesthouse, which is everything a seaside B&B should be nowadays – ultra-friendly, family-run, rooted in its surroundings, but with a dash of contemporary style. Plus it's just yards from the marvellous beach at Gyllingvase.

Hell Bay Hotel

The perfect pocket of luxury on as wild and remote an island as you could dream of. There are 25 suites decked out in contemporary style dotted around the lovely grounds, and once you've settled in you can check out the excellent restaurant and cool bar, before drinking in true delicious sea views.

Loch Melfort Hotel

If there is a more peaceful or romantic spot on the Scottish west coast, we have yet to find it. The rooms that have been recently refurbished in a contemporary style, and the views from all of them stretch out over the sprinkled beads of islands that stretch far into the distance. You can get out onto the water on numerous boat trips, go whale watching and the intrepid can even swim in summer. Or you can just amble about the grounds enjoying the remarkable location.

Midland Hotel

Morecambe may not be the most obvious seaside destination, but this magnificent Art Deco hotel is alone worth the trip, restored recently to its original glory, and with cool, contemporary rooms that boast unparalleled views over the Morecambe Bay and the Lake District Fells beyond. It's not a beachy hotel – Morecambe isn't that sort of place – but the restaurant is excellent, and the building superb, still boasting the original Eric Gill murals and loads of other features. Make sure you check in in time to see the sunset across the Bay.

The Rosevine

We love The Rosevine, a beautifully restored Georgian house up on the cliffs of the Roseland peninsula. With a mixture of studios, suites and self-catering accommodation, it's great for families and groups, but to be honest it;s hard to imagine anyone not liking it here – there's lovely sandy beach two minutes' walk away, a good restaurant when you can;t be bothered to cook, and the chintzily chic town of St Mawes nearby.

Saunton Sands Hotel

This is another of our old favourites, and some say it enjoys the best seaside location in the UK, perched high above the magnificent beach of Saunton and the great expanse of dunes at Braunton Burrows just behind.  It's been here a long time – the building itself is a fatastic 1930s throwback – but it has been careful to update itself over the years, and has a decent restaurant and nicely refurbished rooms, most of which inevitably have glorious views over the beach, and a host of great facilities, including several pools and a fitness centre. Mostly, though, it's the location - convenient not just for Saunton but all the other magnificent beaches that speckle this special stretch of the north Devon coast.
